Commonly Understood Benefits of All-on-4 Dental Implants

Minneapolis implant dentist Dr. Bril is happy to offer the All-on-4 implant system because people appreciate the many benefits it offers. We often talk about these benefits, including:

  • Dental implants can last for life
  • You never have to take out restorations
  • Easy maintenance
  • Function like natural teeth, which means:
    • Eating all your favorite foods
    • Speaking clearly
    • Transfer force to bones, not gums
  • Look natural and feel natural
  • Help you maintain a youthful appearance

The All-on-4 implant system replaces an entire arch of teeth using just four dental implants. These four dental implants support what dentists call a “restoration,” which is also known as either a dental bridge or denture. Unlike traditional dentures, these restorations don’t have to be removed daily for cleaning. They can stay in your mouth. You brush them like natural teeth and floss around the dental implants. Then make your regular dental checkups–it’s like caring for natural teeth.

All-on-4 implant dentures also function like natural teeth. They let you bite and chew normally, so you can enjoy all your favorite foods, including those you might have given up because of bad teeth or dentures. You can also speak clearly with All-on-4 implant dentures–they won’t whistle, click, or slip out of place, even if you’re laughing or shouting. Traditional dentures can make your gums sore because they rest on your gums. All-on-4 implant dentures rest on the implants, which transfer force to your bones, so you won’t get sore gums.

All-on-4 implant dentures look natural. They are beautiful, and people won’t guess they’re not your natural teeth. They’ll help you look younger for longer. Not only do the implant dentures help you look youthful, but they’ll also help you maintain your jawbone, so you’ll retain your facial shape, won’t get a sunken appearance, and will get fewer wrinkles.

Durability of Implants vs. Restorations

We often talk about how long-lasting dental implants are. However, this normally refers to the implant itself, not the restoration.

You see, dental implants replace your teeth using several parts. There’s the implant itself, which is a screw-like fixture, usually made of titanium. It attaches to your jawbone, and you can’t see it. Then there’s the restoration, which is the visible part of the implant. For a single tooth, it’s a dental crown, but for All-on-4, it’s a denture that replaces all the teeth in an arch. Most of the time, a small piece called an abutment connects the two parts.

We know that dental implants can last a lifetime. Studies show that normally something like 93% of dental implants are still in place after 20 years or so, and most implant losses are in people with recognizable risk factors–poor bone quality, poor oral hygiene, and damaging habits like smoking. People who take care of their implants might have them for 50 years or more.

However, the implant restoration–the crown or denture–typically lasts about 10-15 years. Studies show that after 10 years, 90% of crowns placed on implants are still in place.

However, with the All-on-4 implant denture, the restoration has much higher survival rates over significantly longer periods.

99% or Better Restoration Survival

In contrast to standard crowns on dental implants, the All-on-4 implant denture seems to have a much higher survival rate. Two separate studies with high numbers of patients and long-term follow-up show that the All-on-4 implant dentures are very durable.

One study examined nearly 1100 people who got All-on-4 implant dentures in their upper jaw (maxilla) when they’d had their implants for 5-13 years. This study showed that 99.2% of implant dentures were still in place and functional

A parallel study looked at nearly 500 people who got All-on-4 implant dentures in their lower jaw (mandible) when they’d had their implants for 10-18 years. This study showed that 98.8% of implant dentures were still in place and functional at this time

It’s not uncommon for studies to look at implants in the upper and lower jaw separately. The bone quality is different, which can affect implant survival rates. Minneapolis implant dentist Dr. Bril can explain this in detail and help you understand how it might affect your implants. However, in this case, both studies agree: All-on-4 implant dentures can last for a very long time.
